Seven Boise State Students Awarded 2017 Horatio Alger Scholarship
Horatio Alger Association awards $10,000 scholarships to promising Boise State University students through the generosity of Member Robert G. Miller
WASHINGTON, D.C. (May 31, 2017) – Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans, Inc., a nonprofit educational organization honoring the achievements of outstanding individuals and encouraging youth to pursue their dreams through higher education, today announced that seven students from Boise State University have been awarded Horatio Alger Boise State Scholarships in the amount of $10,000. Funded through the generosity of Association Board Member and 2012 Horatio Alger Award recipient Robert G. Miller, CEO of the Albertsons Companies, Inc., these scholarships are awarded to young men and women in recognition of their admirable commitment to continuing their education and serving their communities, despite facing significant personal adversity.
Since the establishment of its scholarship program in 1984, Horatio Alger Association has awarded more than $125 million in undergraduate, graduate and specialized scholarships to students from across the United States (including all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico) and Canada. Horatio Alger Association Members – business, civic and philanthropic leaders who have demonstrated determination and a strong work ethic in their pursuit of personal and professional success – fully fund the organization’s scholarship programs. Robert G. Miller was inducted into the Association as a lifetime Member in 2012 and established the Horatio Alger Boise State University Scholarship that same year.
“It is truly an honor to present the Horatio Alger Boise State Scholarship to this remarkable group of students,” said Robert G. Miller, Horatio Alger Association Board Member. “These seven students were carefully selected among an impressive group of applicants, and each have shown perseverance in the face of significant adversities. I am certain that they will continue to achieve great things in their remaining years at Boise State University and beyond. I congratulate them all wholeheartedly.”
This specialized scholarship program provides financial assistance to students entering their final three years of study at Boise State University. To qualify for the scholarship, applicants must be Idaho residents who are current freshmen at Boise State University and must have at least a 2.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale). They should prove critical financial need and must also demonstrate integrity and perseverance in overcoming adversity.
“On behalf of my fellow Board Members, we are grateful to Mr. Miller for his continued support of this program unwavering commitment to our Horatio Alger Scholars,” said Tony Novelly, chairman, Horatio Alger Association. “It is because of his generosity and the generosity of all of our Members that we are able to grow our scholarship programs each year to touch the lives of more deserving young people than ever before.”
The 2017 Horatio Alger Boise State Scholarship recipients have maintained an average GPA of 3.58 while coming from households with an average annual income of $17,642. For a complete list of the 2017 Boise State Scholars, please click here.
