106 Exceptional High School Students Each Awarded $25,000
through 2017 Horatio Alger National Scholarship Program

Horatio Alger Association will award more than $2.6 million through its National Scholarship Program, which recognizes young men and women who demonstrate a strong commitment to achieve educational success

WASHINGTON, D.C. (January 4, 2017) – Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans, Inc., a nonprofit educational organization honoring the achievements of outstanding individuals and encouraging youth to pursue their dreams through higher education, today announced the 106 recipients of its prestigious 2017 Horatio Alger National Scholarship. These annual scholarships recognize outstanding students, who, in the face of great personal adversity, have exhibited an abiding commitment to continuing their education and serving their communities.

Since the establishment of its scholarship programs in 1984, Horatio Alger Association has awarded more than $125 million in undergraduate, career and technical, graduate as well as specialized scholarships to students across the United States, including all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and Canada. Administering one of the nation’s largest privately-funded, need-based financial aid programs for college students, the Association will award more than $2.6 million to its National Scholars in 2017.

“As we celebrate the Association’s 70th anniversary, we remain steadfast in our commitment to providing young men and women with the support, mentorship and resources needed to achieve personal and professional success,” said Tony Novelly, chairman, Horatio Alger Association and 2000 Horatio Alger Award recipient. “The 2017 National Scholars exemplify so many of the qualities valued by the Association, notably their unwavering commitment to higher education. My fellow Members and I applaud their perseverance and are honored to recognize them for their remarkable efforts.”

The 2017 Horatio Alger Association National Scholars are students who come from households with an average income of $12,775 per year. Each National Scholarship recipient is awarded $25,000 to apply toward the educational costs of the college or university of their choice. Additionally, National Scholars have access to a variety of Association-provided resources including college-preparedness seminars, counseling and referral services and mentoring programs.

In addition to the scholarship, each National Scholar will receive a trip to Washington, D.C. on March 30–April 1, 2017 to attend the Horatio Alger National Scholars Conference (NSC) and participate in college-preparedness and other educational sessions. There, Horatio Alger Scholars will have an opportunity to learn about the Association, its esteemed Members and the various support and mentorship programs in which they can partake during their collegiate careers. In conjunction with the NSC, National Scholars will also be recognized at the Association’s 70th Horatio Alger Award Induction Ceremonies, during which the Association will induct 11 distinguished new Members – ranging from established CEOs to innovative entrepreneurs. The Horatio Alger National Scholarship Program and National Scholars Conference are wholly funded through private donations from Association Members and Friends.
